This is an updated reprint of a piece
I compiled in 1985 & 1986, with help from the Country Music Foundation
(Nashville) and a couple of fellow collectors. It was first published in the
November 1986 issue of the French mag - LATCH
ON - then run by Jean-Guy
Meunier.
Many thanks to Steve Wisner,
Jeff Porterfield, Martin Thomas,
Bobby Gibson
and Pasi
Koskela for their additions.

Lariat cuts feature Billy Liebert & his band and were cut in 1951/1952. The Okeh sessions took place as follows : * RHCO 10484 to 10487 : April 27, 1953 * RHCO 10604 to 10607 : October 8, 1953 * RHCO 10864 to 10867 : April 27, 1954 . The Columbia sessions were cut as follows : * RHCO 33346 to 33349 : February 22, 1955 * RHCO 33561 to 33564 : October 3, 1955 * RHCO 33731 to 33734 : February 28, 1956 * RHCO 33943 to 33946 : August 23, 1956 * RHCO 40147 to 40148 : March 12, 1957 * RHCO 40345 to 40348 : August 26, 1957 * RHCO 40372 to 40375 : September 25, 1957 * RHCO 45777 to 45779 : January 30, 1959 * RHCO 46423 to 46426 : January 5, 1960 . Nigel Burlinson has kindly given me the explanation for that 'RHCO' prefix : R=Radio Recorders, H= Hollywood, CO=Columbia. The Republic sides were cut on February 2, 1960. The previously unreleased stereo mix (where Joe's wonderful overdubs can be clearly heard) appears on two Sundazed CDs : 'Wild Men Ride Wild Guitars' (HC 12001) & 'Sundazed Sampler' (SC PRO 01). The Mac Gregor stuff dates back probably to 1960/61 (or earlier). The above Capitol sides were recorded circa 1962. Most of the above sessions were done in Hollywood (Radio Recorders, etc), although a few may have been cut in Nashville. After Capitol, Joe was signed to Starday Records. The Starday sides are all from the 1964-1966 period and were cut in Nashville. I think that other promo EPs culled from Joe's Starday LPs exist. The Mosrite and Chart outings are also late '60s / early '70s recordings. The Outreach single was released on that Nashville label in 1975 (song written by Joe & Rose Lee). The second CMH release is from 1979. The rare Ripcord single was recorded at The Ripcord Recording Studios in Vancouver, Washington. Musician & label owner, Bobby Gibson, co-produced the record with Rick Keefer ; Joe definitely played on it and the string section (on 'You') was from the Portland Symphony Orchestra in Oregon. The Windsor label was out of Temple City, California. Most tracks are 'square dance instrumentals'. |
